How to Clean the Most Common Kid-Related Stains

If you have found yourself in a position where you are looking at a carpet full of kid related stains, or perhaps you are considering purchasing new carpet and are looking for information on what sort of upkeep to expect with children in the home, this is the post to help. With extensive experience providing professional carpet cleaning in Williamson CountyWilliamson Cleanpro has put together a list of the child-caused stains we commonly see, and how you can take care of them.

Chocolate

carpet cleaning in williamsonOne of the most common stains that will see a homeowner seek out professional carpet cleaning is chocolate. This is for two reasons. Kids love chocolate, and parents seem to prefer lighter colored carpet. Unfortunately, the two create the perfect recipe for disaster.

If you are looking down at a child's face covered in chocolate that suspiciously matches a chocolate stain on your carpet, here is what you'll need:
  • A butter knife
  • Two clean cloths
  • A bowl of room temperature water
  • Regular (non-bleach) laundry/dishwashing detergent
Once you have these items, it is time to tackle the stain.
  1. Use the butter knife to scrape away any excess chocolate pieces or liquid. Do your best not to scrape the fibers too hard as this can push the stain further into your carpet.
  2. Mix a small amount of detergent into your water.
  3. Using the clean cloth, gently apply the mixture in a light circular motion. The purpose of this is to agitate the chocolate from the fiber. However, it is important you do this lightly so that you do not make the stain worse.
  4. Once you have removed the stain, pour a small amount of clean water over the area and gently press the second clean cloth to absorb any residue.
  5. The final step is to let the stain dry completely. If moisture is left to sit at the root of your carpet, it can promote mold growth and damage to your carpet.

Chewing Gum

williamson carpet cleaningit comes to removing chewing gum from your carpet, it depends on how long it has been left to set. If you suspect that the chewing gum was left days ago, your best bet is to speak with a professional to arrange carpet cleaning. If you are confident it is a new occurrence, you will need the following:

  • An ice pack or a small bag of ice cubes
  • A butter knife or spatula
  • White vinegar
  • A bowl of warm water
  • Two clean cloths
When you have all of these, take a deep breath, and let's begin:
  1. Take your ice pack or the small bag of ice, and let it sit on the chewing gum until it has completely hardened. Don't be tempted to leave it for a minute or two. Allow sufficient time for the chewing gum to harden completely.
  2. Once the chewing gum is hard, use your butter knife or spatula to shatter the gum and pick away the broken pieces. There may be times where small pieces will stick to carpet fibers. When this occurs, gently scrape the chewing gum to lift it from your carpet.
  3. With all of the pieces of chewing gum removed, add a small amount of white vinegar to your bowl of warm water, and gently rub the remaining stain with a clean cloth.
  4. Use the second cloth to blot the area as dry as possible. Similar to the removal of chocolate, it is important that the area be left to dry completely before covering or walking over it.
The above methods are great ways to erase stains from your carpet. However, similar to all home-based stain removal procedures, their effectiveness is limited by the severity of the stain and how long ago it occurred. If you have tried the above methods to no avail, all is not lost.

Soda

removing stains from carpetsSoda is a popular item when it comes to stains that are caused by kids. Unfortunately, the many coloring agents that are inside soda can leave bright stains on your carpet which are not only unsightly, but often difficult to remove if left to sit for too long. If you notice soda has spilled on your carpet, you are going to need the following:

  • Paper towel
  • Three clean cloths
  • Non-bleach detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Warm water
With these items at the ready, let's begin:
  1. The first step is to remove as much of the liquid as possible. If you are lucky enough to see the stain occur, use the paper towel and gently absorb as much of the liquid as possible.
  2. In a bowl, mix a small amount of detergent with warm water.
  3. Using a clean cloth, lightly soak the stain with the detergent mix and wait around 15 minutes.
  4. After the time has elapsed, take a clean cloth and blot the stained area until it feels dry to the touch
  5. Empty your bowl and create a new mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts warm water.
  6. With the second clean cloth, press the vinegar mixture into the stained area and leave for another 15 minutes. If possible, place a heavy object over your cloth to assist the vinegar mixture to absorb into the stain.
  7. When the time is up, use the third clean cloth to blot and absorb any remaining solution and liquid.
  8. As with all tips in this list, the final step is to allow the stained area to dry before you walk on it. If possible, set a small fan and target it towards the area to assist with the drying time.

Vomit

how to clean carpetsWe left this stain for last. Not because it is the least common stain that parents seek to be removed with professional carpet cleaning, but because it is the least enjoyed of all stains that kids can produce.  However, while the idea may be off-putting, the removal process is pretty straight forward. To remove a vomit stain, you will need these items:

  • Vacuum Cleaner
  • Gloves
  • Spatula
  • A plastic bag
  • Baking Soda or Corn Starch
  • Liquid detergent
  • Club Soda
  • Clean cloths
  • Warm water
With these items at the ready, it is time to begin:
  1. The first step is the hardest - removing excess vomit. With your gloves on, do your best to remove excess vomit and place it in the plastic bag. For the excess that you can not collect with your hands, use the spatula to scrape it gently from the carpet.
  2. Take the baking soda or Corn Starch and apply it liberally to the stained area, including a small area around the stain. The baking soda will absorb any remaining moisture. Leave this to do its work for about 15 minutes.
  3. With your vacuum cleaner, vacuum over the stained area thoroughly to remove all instances of the baking soda.
  4. Now it is time to work on removing the leftover stain. Take your club soda and pour it over the stained area.
  5. Once you have covered the stain, take a cloth and blot the area to absorb the club soda a lift out the stain. If this has not completely removed the stain, continue applying club soda and absorbing until it has completely lifted.
  6. Once you have removed the stain, apply another liberal amount of baking soda over the area and leave it overnight. The baking soda will work to remove any leftover moisture along with removing any odor. Be sure to mark off the area to ensure that nobody walks over it.
This method for removing vomit stains out of your carpet works best if you can treat the stain shortly after it has occurred. If the stain has been left too long, you may struggle to remove it yourself. If this is the case, a professional provider of carpet cleaning in Williamson County is going to be your best option.
